Este artigo estuda as diferentes marcas de combustão presentes em ocorrências de incêndio em edificações. Busca demonstrar de que forma a interpretação correta dessas marcas possibilitará ao investigador de incêndio identificar o sentido de propagação das chamas. Para tanto, são abordados os seguintes tópicos: exames externos e internos da edificação; morfologia das marcas de combustão; áreas de queima limpa; marcas em polímeros termoplásticos e lâmpadas incandescentes; considerações sobre a madeira; e simulação computacional por meio dos aplicativos Fire Dinamycs Simulator e Smokeview. Na conclusão, ratifica-se a importância deste estudo à descoberta de elementos como zona de origem e foco inicial, além das causas do incêndio. Sugere-se, por fim, que trabalhos futuros versem sobre marcas de combustão em incêndios florestais e incêndios em veículos.
