O presente trabalho faz um estudo sobre as causas e consequências da obstrução das saídas de emergência pelas pessoas durante a evacuação urgente sob elevada densidade populacional. Em um ambiente controlado e livre de obstáculos, foram realizados experimentos de evacuação através de uma única saída com 1,12 m de vão livre, variando-se apenas a densidade populacional. Nas filmagens foram observados diversos fenômenos tais como a formação de arcos de sustentação, onde as pessoas ficam presas umas às outras e contra às paredes, e a turbulência, caracterizada pelo deslocamento aleatório e involuntário das pessoas dentro da multidão. O modelo de simulação proposto por Helbing, Farkas e Vicsek (2000) foi validado com os dados do experimento e posteriormente utilizado para simular a influência dos tamanhos de porta no tempo de evacuação.
