O serviço aeromédico começou com a Guerra Franco-Prussiana em 1870, quando, pela primeira vez, transportaram pacientes feridos com o uso de balão de ar quente. Deste momento em diante, alavancado com a invenção do avião e posteriormente do helicóptero, surgem no mundo os Helicópteros de Emergências Médicas (HEMS), como um serviço de saúde de Atendimento Pré-Hospitalar (APH), que apresenta com uma capacidade impressionante de locomoção e versatilidade, sendo capaz de levar o APH a um nível nunca antes atingido, quando atuando em complemento às unidades de APH terrestres. Apesar de o helicóptero ter um uso universal, para o serviço de HEMS há a necessidade de que sejam atendidos requisitos mínimos, aplicados tanto aos modelos de aeronaves quanto aplicado às organizações. Isso se faz necessário para que se tenha um serviço de qualidade e sejam atendidos os padrões mínimos exigidos pelo Ministério da Saúde do Brasil, dirigidos para a boa gestão dos recursos públicos.
